How The Ledger is compiled

The method, published

The Ledger is Aparté’s archive of Broadway grosses. Its method is short enough to print in full, and it is printed here so any reader can re-check our work.

The source

The Broadway League publishes Broadway’s weekly grosses: total gross, attendance, percentage of capacity, average ticket price, the number of productions playing, and the week’s top production with its gross. The Ledger takes those figures as published. We do not estimate, project or reconstruct grosses, and a figure we cannot verify against the League’s published record does not enter the archive.

What we record

For each week: the week ending, the season, the number of productions, total gross, total attendance, capacity, average ticket, and the top production and its gross — exactly the fields on every Ledger page.

Reconciliation

Each week’s figures are checked against the League’s own published season aggregates as the season accumulates. When a figure in a secondary source disagrees with the League’s, the League’s figure stands, and the disagreement is recorded in our coverage notes rather than propagated.

Our arithmetic

Per-production averages, capacity readings and week-to-week movement are computed from the published figures. That arithmetic — and the archive itself — is Aparté’s contribution; the numbers are the League’s.

The archive

The Ledger is backfilled honestly from the public record and grows one week at a time, forward. No week is presented as more complete than the record behind it.

Corrections

If a figure is wrong, the week page is corrected, the correction is noted on that page, and the entry is logged on the Corrections page. Report a figure to the Data Desk via the Masthead contact route.
